Kochi: Kerala's first transgender radio jockey Ananya Kumari Alex was found dead in an apartment near Edappally on Tuesday evening.  Police said they suspect he committed suicide.  He had been suffering from severe physical ailments for the past one year after undergoing sex reassignment surgery at a private hospital in the city, according to online media.

Ananya, 28, had been living in an apartment in Edappally for the past few months.  Police said the body was found hanging from a fan in the bedroom.  A team from Kalamassery police station conducted an investigation and shifted the body to the medical college for postmortem.

Ananya, who underwent sex reassignment surgery in June 2020, had recently come to the scene against the hospital.  The doctor complained that he was in severe pain after the surgery and could not even do regular work.  They blamed the doctor for the failure of the surgery.  Ananya was the first transgender person to contest the Assembly elections in 2021 when she was the Democratic Social Justice Party candidate in Vengara in Malappuram district.  She was a news anchor and makeup artist.

Ananya, a native of Perumon, Kollam, rose to fame as a trans rights activist after experiencing bitter experiences from a young age.  “Her death is truly tragic and shocking.  She has been in severe pain for the past one year after sex reassignment surgery.  She went for the surgery hoping to lead a life of her choice, ”said Anil A, a member of the Kerala State Transgender Justice Board.

He says there is no law in the state to monitor sex reassignment surgeries. ”Many private hospitals claim to specialize in performing surgeries.  But there are no rules to monitor this.  The state needs to prepare a protocol for performing such surgeries and appoint an ethical committee to monitor and evaluate sexual reassignment surgery, ”he added.

Everyone in this world is the same.  Therefore, it is essential for the trans community to have the rights it needs, and the laws must be open to it.
